English · Meaning

In the revered Vālmīki Rāmāyaṇa, in the Ayodhyā Kāṇḍa, the fifty-second chapter. At dawn, when the night had ended, the great-famed one—following the transmitted wording “pṛthu vṛkṣā,” literally “broad trees,” whose construction is unresolved here—spoke to Saumitri, Lakṣmaṇa of auspicious marks. Conditionally, if that wording reflects pṛthu-vakṣāḥ, the sense is “the broad-chested, greatly renowned one,” namely Rāma.
