In the revered Valmiki Ramayana, in the Bala-kanda, the eighth canto. Of that great-souled man, who possessed such prowess and knew dharma, and who was distressed for the sake of a son, there was no son to continue his lineage.
चिन्तयानस्य तस्यैवं बुद्धिरासीन्महात्मनः । सुतार्थं वाजिमेधेन किमर्थं न यजाम्यहम् ॥१-८-२॥
As that great-souled man was thinking in this way, the thought arose in him: “For the sake of a son, why should I not perform a horse sacrifice?”
स निश्चितां मतिं कृत्वा यष्टव्यमिति बुद्धिमान् । मन्त्रिभिः सह धर्मात्मा सर्वैरेव कृतात्मभिः ॥१-८-३॥
Having made the firm decision, “it ought to be sacrificed,” he—the wise, righteous-souled one—[was] together with the ministers, all of whom were self-controlled.
ततोऽब्रवीन्महातेजाः सुमन्त्रं मन्त्रिसत्तम । शीघ्रमानय मे सर्वान् गुरूंस्तान् सपुरोहितान् ॥१-८-४॥
Then the greatly illustrious one said to Sumantra, foremost of ministers: “Bring quickly to me all those teachers, accompanied by priests.”
ततः सुमन्त्रस्त्वरितं गत्वा त्वरितविक्रमः । समानयत् स तान् सर्वान् समस्तान् वेदपारगान् ॥१-८-५॥
Then Sumantra, having gone swiftly and being swift in action, brought together all those—every one of them—fully versed in the Veda.
