Therefore I say: “Even though well concealed, while being guarded ...” (47). So then, will you depart like Śyāmalaka—after enduring excessive humiliation—by the giving of a “half-moon” to you?

There is here, on the surface of the earth, a city named Vikaṇṭaka. There was a very wealthy merchant, named Īśvara. Four sons-in-law of his, visiting guests from the Avantī region, came to the city of Vikaṇṭaka. And they were honored by him with great respect, with food, clothing, and the like. In this way, while they were staying there, a period of six months came about. Then Īśvara told his own wife: “Since these sons-in-law, won over by the utmost honor, do not go to their own homes, what is to be said? They will not go without an insult. So today, at mealtime, water for washing their feet is not to be given, so that, recognizing the insult, they will leave and go.” When this was carried out accordingly, Garga went because of the insult over foot-washing, Soma because of the giving of a low seat, and Datta because of bad food. Thus those three also left and went away. When the fourth, Śyāmalaka, still did not go, he was then expelled by the giving of the “half-moon.”
