He said: “Story 3. The story of the Brahmin Mitraśarman.”
In a certain settlement there lived a Brahmin named Mitraśarman, who had undertaken the Agnihotra observance. Once, in the month of Māgha, when a gentle wind was blowing, when the sky was covered with clouds, and when Parjanya was raining very softly, he went to some other village for the purpose of requesting an animal, and a certain sacrificer was asked: “O sacrificer! On the coming new-moon day I shall perform a sacrifice. Therefore give me one animal.”
Then he too—the one to whom a scripture-prescribed, plump-bodied animal had been given by that man—realizing that it was fit and was going this way and that, put it on his shoulder and quickly set out facing toward his own town.
Then, on his way as he was going, three rogues whose throats were emaciated by hunger appeared before him. Seeing such a plump-bodied animal mounted on his shoulder, they said to one another: “Ah! By eating this animal, today’s snowfall is being rendered pointless. Therefore, after deceiving him and taking the animal, let us obtain protection from the cold.”
Then one of them, having made a change of disguise, came face to face by a side path and said to that keeper of the sacred fires: “O, O foolish Agnihotrin! Why is such a laughable act, contrary to people’s practice, being performed, since this impure dog is being carried mounted on your shoulder? And it has been said, for:”
