When Mahendra, exceedingly powerful, had been conquered by Rāvaṇa’s son, the gods then went to Laṅkā, placing Prajāpati at their head.
तत्र रावणमासाद्य पुत्रभ्रातृभिरावृतम् । अब्रवीद्गगने तिष्ठन्सामपूर्वं प्रजापतिः ।। ७.३०.२ ।।
There, approaching Rāvaṇa, who was surrounded by his sons and brothers, Prajāpati, standing in the sky, spoke, beginning with conciliatory words.
वत्स रावण तुष्टो ऽस्मि पुत्रस्य तव संयुगे । अहो ऽस्य विक्रमौदार्यं तव तुल्यो ऽधिको ऽपि वा ।। ७.३०.३ ।।
O dear one, Rāvaṇa, I am pleased with your son in battle. Ah, his valor and generosity are equal to yours—or perhaps even greater.
जितं हि भवता सर्वं त्रैलोक्यं स्वेन तेजसा । कृता प्रतिज्ञा सफला प्रीतो ऽस्मि स्वसुतेन वै ।। ७.३०.४ ।।
Indeed, by you the entire threefold world has been conquered through your own power. The vow has been fulfilled; I am pleased, indeed, by my own son.
अयं च पुत्रो ऽतिबलस्तव रावण वीर्यवान् । जगतीन्द्रजिदित्येव परिख्यातो भविष्यति ।। ७.३०.५ ।।
And this son of yours, O Rāvaṇa, is exceedingly strong and possessed of prowess; he will indeed become widely renowned in the world by the very name ‘Indrajit.’
