Rāvaṇa, thus addressed by Vibhīṣaṇa, gave orders to those Rākṣasas: ‘Then today let only this tail be burned.’
ततस्तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा मम पुच्छं समन्ततः। वेष्टितं शणवल्कैश्च पट्टैः कार्पासकैस्तथा॥ १५२॥
Then, having heard his words, they wrapped my tail all around with hemp fibers, strips of cloth, and cotton materials likewise.
राक्षसाः सिद्धसंनाहास्ततस्ते चण्डविक्रमाः। तदादीप्यन्त मे पुच्छं हनन्तः काष्ठमुष्टिभिः॥ १५३॥
Then those Rākṣasas, fully equipped and of fierce valor, set my tail alight while striking it with wooden fists or clubs.
बद्धस्य बहुभिः पाशैर्यन्त्रितस्य च राक्षसैः। न मे पीडाभवत् काचिद् दिदृक्षोर्नगरीं दिवा॥ १५४॥
Though bound, and also fastened by many cords by the Rākṣasas, no pain at all came to me, since by day I wished to see the city.
ततस्ते राक्षसाः शूरा बद्धं मामग्निसंवृतम्। अघोषयन् राजमार्गे नगरद्वारमागताः॥ १५५॥
Then those heroic rākṣasas, having arrived at the city gate, loudly proclaimed me, bound and enveloped in fire, on the royal road.
