In the revered Ramayana of Valmiki, in the Aranyakanda, the sixty-fourth canto. Distressed, he addressed Lakshmana with a piteous voice: “Quickly, Lakshmana, ascertain this: go to the Godavari River.”
अपि गोदावरीं सीता पद्मान्यानयितुं गता। एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण लक्ष्मणः पुनरेव हि॥ २॥
“Could Sita have gone to the Godavari to bring lotuses?” When Rama had spoken thus, Lakshmana indeed [went] once more.
नदीं गोदावरीं रम्यां जगाम लघुविक्रमः। तां लक्ष्मणस्तीर्थवतीं विचित्वा राममब्रवीत्॥ ३॥
The swift-striding Lakshmana went to the lovely Godavari River. Having searched her, rich in sacred fords, he said to Rama:
नैनां पश्यामि तीर्थेषु क्रोशतो न शृणोति मे। कं नु सा देशमापन्ना वैदेही क्लेशनाशिनी॥ ४॥
“I do not see her at the sacred fords; though I call out, she does not hear me. To what region, then, has that Vaidehi gone—the remover of distress?”
नहि तं वेद्मि वै राम यत्र सा तनुमध्यमा। लक्ष्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा दीनः संतापमोहितः॥ ५॥
“For I truly do not know that place, O Rama, where that slender-waisted woman is.” Having heard Lakshmana’s words, Rama was despondent and bewildered by anguish.
