In a certain region of a forest there once lived a lion named Karāla-kesara. And he had a jackal named Dhūsaraka as an attendant, always following him. Then, once, while he was fighting with an elephant, very severe blows were produced on his body, by which he was unable to move even one step. And because of his not moving, Dhūsaraka, his throat wasted by hunger, fell into weakness. On another day he said to him: “Master! I am afflicted by hunger. I cannot move even from one step to another. So how can I perform service for you?”
