While he was speaking thus, the hunter also arrived, with his bow drawn up to his ear and ready to shoot. Seeing him, the mouse cut the hunter's snare at that very moment. Meanwhile, Citrāṅga ran away quickly while looking back; Laghupatanaka climbed a tree; and Hiraṇyaka entered a nearby burrow. Then that hunter, his face dejected because the deer had escaped and his effort had been fruitless, saw Mantharaka moving very slowly in the middle of the open ground. He thought: “Although the deer has been taken away by fate, this tortoise has nevertheless been obtained for food. With this meat, the sustenance of my household will be secured today.”
Having thought thus, he covered him with darbha grass, placed him on his bow, put him on his shoulder, and set out toward home. Meanwhile, seeing him being carried away, Hiraṇyaka, overwhelmed with grief, lamented: “Alas, hardship! Hardship has befallen us.”

Before I reach the end of one sorrow and cross over it as though it were the ocean, a second one has arisen for me; in the gaps, misfortunes multiply.
