English · Meaning

Formerly I lived in a certain tree. There below, in a hollow, there used to live a sparrow named Kapiñjala. Then, whenever the two of us had come back at sunset, time would pass for us as we experienced the highest pleasure through conversation containing many fine sayings, through recounting the ancient deeds of divine seers, Brahman-seers, and royal seers, and through telling of many wonders seen in our wanderings. Then once Kapiñjala, for the sake of sustaining his life, went with other sparrows to another region of ripe rice, the transmitted wording being pakva-śāli-prāñaṃ; the exact force of prāñaṃ is uncertain, perhaps “mostly/abounding in” if it stands for prāyaṃ. Thereafter, when he had not come even at night-time, I, anxious in mind and grieved by separation from him, thought: “Alas, why has Kapiñjala not come today? Has he been caught in some snare? Or perhaps has he been killed by someone? In any case, if he is safe—since he does not stay without me.”
